Volvo Takes on Mercedes, BMW with Electric Large Sedan

Volvo Cars is broadening its EV lineup with an electric variant of the flagship S90 sedan.

The large sedan, code-named V511, will be built in Chengdu, China, starting in January 2025, according to AutoForecast Solutions. U.S. deliveries are expected to begin in the first half of that year.

Volvo has told dealers that it expects to launch seven new and redesigned electrified models, including five battery-electric vehicles, as it goes all-electric by the start of the next decade.

The new Volvo, reportedly badged as the ES90, will compete with the Tesla Model S, Mercedes-Benz EQE sedan, and BMW i5.

The EV is not expected to be a volume seller in the U.S. Volvo sold 1,451 S90 sedans here last year.

The battery-powered sedan is based on the company’s electric SPA2 platform, which underpins the upcoming Volvo EX90 and Polestar 3 crossovers.

The EX90 is powered by a 111-kilowatt-hour battery that delivers 496 hp. It has an EPA-estimated range of up to 300 miles.

The new electric sedan, available in single- and-dual-motor variants, should deliver up to 350 miles of range, given its lighter weight and more aerodynamic profile, a source briefed on the product said.

The person described the sedan as having a fastback design and a “larger presence” than the S90.

The S90 is expected to continue to be sold alongside the EV in the U.S.
