1974 Volvo 164e Convertible Conversion
She’s a running, driving project. I stumbled upon it at an online auction in Indiana and brought it back to Maine. I don’t have all the details but my understanding is this car was originally owned by the owner of Portland Volvo and Bates & Cunningham Volvo, he wanted a convertible so he took a 164 off the lot and had it customized.
It’s obviously been kept indoors as the body is rust free. Paint is in relatively good shape with some minor but notable chips. I had it gone through mechanically at Independent Auto (Augusta, ME) so it’s roadworthy but still needs some dialing in (still a bit sluggish). The interior isn’t perfect but it’s decent. Carpets are great, leather seats are quite dry but not torn. The rallye instrument cluster is partially working (speedo is all over the place) but other than that all electrical systems seem to work fine.
Electric top works great and is in great shape. Boot cover is solid.
Biggest issue is glass: 3 of the 4 door windows were cracked during shipping – seems the car was shipped to me without the B-pillars installed and the windows rattled along for 1000 miles cracking in the process.
Should be a fantastic project for someone, it’s a looker and its sure to be the only 164e convertible you’ll see at the next cars & coffee. I’d keep it but I’ve got 4 other cars to work on ahead of it and I think someone else would be better suited to give it the time it deserves and really enjoy it.
First photo is from the auction site when I bought it. Other photos are in my driveway.
