Irv Gordon ‘MilnMilr’ Scholarship Award Information 2020


 

WHAT?  A scholarship - commemorating the life of Irv Gordon and his world record achievement of driving his Volvo for 53 years accumulating over 3,320,000 miles - to promote, reward, and support education in the field automotive technology, maintenance, or restoration.

Endowed by Castrol® and administered through Driving Young America, the winning applicant will receive a $5,000 scholarship presented by the Volvo Club of America to an accredited, post-secondary school of the winner’s choice to study for a career in automotive technology.

WHY?  To encourage and educate students to pursue an automotive industry career and to reinforce the importance of vehicle maintenance exemplified by Mr. Gordon who adhered to routine, recommended maintenance practices, insisting on the use of premium lubricants and OEM parts. It was this practice that allowed him and his Volvo to reach the Guinness World Record of accumulating the most miles by a single person in a single, privately owned vehicle.

WHO?  This opportunity is available to a student who applies and:

  1.  Demonstrates an interest and potential to succeed in the automotive field.
  2.  Has applied and received acceptance as a student on the post-secondary level of education to an appropriately accredited institution and elects to pursue an education in automotive technology.
  3.  Demonstrates superior quality of previous scholastic or practical endeavors;
  4.  Is at least 17 years of age.
  5.  Is a child or grandchild of a VCOA member household or a friend, co-worker recommended and sponsored by a VCOA member or chapter.

Referrals from Driving Young America (DYA) may request a match to a club member in their vicinity area for endorsement by contacting the club HERE

WHEN? Completed applications must be received by August 18, 2020.  A VCOA committee will select the winner who will be announced in September and presented with the scholarship at a Live (virtual) event hosted by VCOA in October (date tbd).

Driving Young America (DYA) is the charitable fund of the Hilton Head Island Concours d’Elegance & Motoring Festival. ​ The mission of Driving Young America is to support the education, inspiration and creativity of youth who have an interest in the design, performance, restoration, safety, service/repair and historical significance of the automobile. Funding is generated from attendees, exhibitors, special friends and through a variety of events before, during, and after each year’s event.
